FAQs

What type of therapy do you do?

My approach is primarily psychodynamic. This means I help individuals and couples understand themselves better in the context of the unique forces that have shaped them. This can include things like temperament, cultural identities, and significant relationships and past experiences. I work to help you uncover recurring themes and patterns that may underlie many different problems, rather addressing only one problem at a time. There is research evidence that this type of therapy tends to produce longer lasting results. I also integrate other perspectives as needed, including mindfulness and self-compassion, attachment theory, neuroscience, and trauma informed care.

How can I know if therapy with you will help me?

The quality of the relationship with your therapist is the strongest predictor of how much benefit you will get from therapy. Research shows it matters much more than the therapist’s training or theoretical orientation. The first way for you to get a sense of what our relationship would be like is to have an initial consultation. I’d then encourage you to try a few sessions before you decide to commit to longer-term work.

What kinds of clients do you work with?

I deeply value getting to talk to a wide variety of people about the things that matter most to them. I have experience and am committed to providing an affirming environment for clients with diverse racial, gender, sexual, ability, and other identities.

How will we meet? Do you offer telehealth services?

I offer both in person and telehealth (video or phone) sessions. We can discuss which one makes the most sense for you in our initial consultation. We can also change modalities over time if needed.

Where is your office? Is there parking? Is it wheelchair accessible?

My office is on Grand Avenue in Oakland, near the Morcom Rose Garden. There is paid parking in front of the building and free parking in the surrounding neighborhood. My office is not wheelchair accessible, but with advance notice we can use another office in the building that is. Get Directions.

What is your fee, and do you accept my insurance?

My fee is $195 per 50 minute session and $290 per 75 minute session. I have a limited number of sliding-scale appointments for people who can’t afford to pay the full fee. If you contact me and these appointments are currently full, I can help you identify other lower fee options. My individual therapy services are often partially reimbursable using insurance. I know what to ask insurers about this, and I can either walk you through this or, if you like, contact your insurer on your behalf to help you understand your coverage. If you have an HSA or health care FSA, I can provide you with the documentation you need to get reimbursed.
